An intuition that saved his life.
In April 2022, an American became suspicious of his wife , a 45-year-old dermatologist, after she began to fall ill and noticed a strange taste in her tea.
The husband indeed suspected his wife of pouring bleach in his herbal tea . He complained in particular of stomach ulcers, gastritis and esophagitis, according to his lawyer.
In an attempt to catch her in the act, the man therefore decided to install a hidden camera in the kitchen of their home located in the state of South Carolina.
Thanks to the recorded images, he discovered that his wife had paid a strange substance at least three times.
He then took samples of his tea and sent them to a laboratory. After analysis, the police revealed that it was a drain cleaner.
The suspect was arrested and charged with three counts of poisoning and one count of domestic assault.
"Our homes should be where we feel safest. Yet a licensed medical professional took advantage of her husband's daily rituals to torment him by systematically dotting his tea with a Drano-like substance. (liquid drain cleaner, editor's note), in order to make him suffer," Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer said.
For his part, counsel for the mis en cause declared that his client would plead not guilty to the charges brought against her. " Drano is not a secret poisoning agent. It has a strong smell and taste and is very caustic," the attorney explained, adding that the wife " Looks forward to his day in court when the truth finally comes out" .
Moreover, he also refutes the allegations that the wife was trying to take advantage of her husband, because she had her own practice and earned more than her husband. She faces a maximum sentence of eight years in prison if convicted.
